Marzena Wasikowska

About

Marzena Wasikowska is a visual artist specialising in photomedia. Based in Canberra, Australia, Marzena has maintained a professional practice in portraiture and landscape photography since the mid-1980s. She is currently a PHD candidate in Photography and Media Arts at the Australian National University.

Her landscape photography is inspired by fieldwork and studio meditations on the built environment, waterscapes and global warming. These themes are an enduring part of her academic research. In 2017, Marzena wrote in relation to a body of work, Earth’s Self Correcting Systems, Gold Coast and Alaska series, that considers human induced climate change. ‘The series is a response to our environmental predicament and advances a notion of a sublime. We stand in awe before nature wondering what on earth we have done’.

As a highlight of her portrait photography, each year Marzena produces a portrait of the immediate family to summarise the previous twelve months. Usually, the portrait is submitted to the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Portrait Prize. This year, 2021, marks the fifth time Marzena Wasikowska’s portrait has been selected as a finalist for exhibition.
